Rahul Gandhi in a message to Rishi Sunak: “I deeply appreciate your efforts to strengthen India-UK relations”

New Delhi (India), July 6: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday expressed his condolences over the defeat of the Rishi Sunak-led Conservative party in the British general election.

He explained that both victories and setbacks are “inevitable parts” of the journey in a democracy.

“I would like to express my condolences on the recent election result. Victories and setbacks are both an inevitable part of the path of a democracy and we must accept both with composure,” Rahul Gandhi said in a statement.

The Congress leader also praised Sunak’s public service and commitment to the people, as well as his efforts to strengthen India-UK ties.

He also reiterated his confidence that he would continue to be involved in public life and wished him all the best in his future endeavours.

“Your dedication to public service and commitment to your people are commendable. I also deeply appreciate your efforts to strengthen India-UK relations during your tenure. I am confident that you will continue to contribute to public life with your experience,” the statement added.

He added: “I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.”

The Labour Party has achieved a major success in the UK elections, coming to power after 14 years of Conservative rule.

Starmer, a former lawyer who entered Parliament in 2015, took over as leader of the Labour Party in 2020.

In his first speech to 10 Downing Street, Starmer promised to serve all citizens, regardless of who they voted for, and assured that the process of change to “rebuild Britain” would begin immediately.

Earlier on the same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to his British counterpart Starmer on the phone and congratulated him on his election as British Prime Minister.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the United Kingdom.

The Prime Minister invited Starmer to visit India soon. The two leaders agreed to work towards an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial free trade agreement between India and the UK.

Prime Minister Modi had earlier praised former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s contribution in promoting India-UK relations.

“Thank you @RishiSunak for your admirable leadership of the UK and active contribution towards deepening India-UK relations during your tenure. Best wishes to you and your family for the future,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X.
