Trevor Lawrence: I am grateful that they recognize my value

The Jaguars and Trevor Lawrence made his new contract official when the quarterback signed his five-year contract extension on Thursday.

In his press conference, Lawrence said he had known last week that both sides were close to reaching an agreement. And now that the agreement has been reached, he is happy about the stability that a long-term contract brings, Lawrence said.

“I think financially, of course, it’s great and it really sets us up for the future and the rest of our lives. So that’s a huge blessing – that’s a big deal, of course. But I think even more important is the stability, here for the long-term,” said Lawrence. “To be able to say we’re going to be here and have confidence and know that, it means a lot to us. And we love it here. It’s become our home. Our families love it, our families love coming here. And we’ve really settled in – this is our home. So we wanted to stay here long-term.

“It’s obviously a place we love to be, and we know that because we’ve been through good times and bad times when it comes to football. So we’ve been through both and we love being here either way. And with the way the organization is evolving and the direction we’re going in football, it’s very clear to us that it’s a no-brainer. We’re on the right track and I want to be the quarterback here. I want to bring a championship to Jacksonville. That’s my goal. And I really know we can do that. I’m excited about it.”

Lawrence didn’t necessarily want to describe his feelings as relief now that the deal is done, but noted that everyone involved wanted to resolve the matter before training camp.

“To have it done and put it behind us so we can move on and just play and get ready for training camp instead of thinking in the back of our minds that it didn’t get done… any season is great, but it feels good to know that I’m going to be here and have that stability,” Lawrence said. “It doesn’t really change much, but it feels good to get it done. That was a goal that the team and I and my team wanted to accomplish, was to have it done by training camp so we can just focus everything on this year and get ready to get a championship here.”

Lawrence added that it is a good feeling to have the support of the organization’s leadership in the years to come.

“I’m just grateful that they see that in me and want me here as a quarterback,” Lawrence said. “And obviously that’s what I want, but it takes two to tango. So I’m grateful that they see my value and I’m really confident in what we can accomplish here.”
