Fireworks, rain and racing action at Davenport Speedway

On Friday, Davenport Speedway hosted a wild night of racing action. The evening had a bit of everything. There was rain, a rollover, and lots of destroyed race cars. After the racing program was over, racing fans were also treated to a fireworks display.

For Cory Dumpert of Newman Grove, Nebraska, the long trip to Davenport was worth it with a win in The Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Model Feature. It is his first win in Davenport.

Kasey Williams took a big lead in the 25-lap main race. Williams had a six-second lead over the second-place driver when the yellow flag was waved on lap eleven. Dumpert started the race on the sixth row but was in fifth place when the yellow flag was waved. It took Cory ten more laps to take the lead, but once he was in front, he was able to pull away from the field.

Williams held on to finish second, ahead of Matt Ryan, Andy Nezworski and CJ Horn (in that order). Dumpert, Michael Leal and Robbie Jorgensen won the late model heats.

The only repeat winner of the evening came from Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Modified division. Ben Chapman scored his second win of the season. Chapman took the point from early race leader Kyle Montgomery on lap four and never gave it up again. Behind Chapman, three drivers fought side by side for second place.

Matt Werner rode on the top side and was in second place for many laps. Chris Zogg rode on the bottom line and stayed in the top five. Charlie Mohr steadily worked his way up from 12th on the grid. On the final lap, Mohr went to the middle and managed to get three drivers wide apart.

Mohr secured second place with a lead of two hundredths of a second. Werner pushed Zogg into third place by 0.001 seconds. Mitch Way completed the top five. Jeremy Mills came in sixth.

17-year-old Rayce Mullen earned his first win at Davenport in D&K Home Products IMCA SportMod action. Mullen led thirteen laps of the fifteen-lap race. Logan Veloz fought his way to second but was unable to close the gap on the leader. Josh Starr finished third. Levi Heath and Dakota Cole finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the main race of the Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock, it was a matter of victory or defeat. Jesse Owen was able to pull away from Donnie Louck on the restart on lap seven and led the rest of the way to the finish line. The victory was Jesse’s first of the season in Davenport. Louck remained second, Austin Riggs third. Cary Brown was fourth and Roger Rickels fifth.

The main race of the IMCA Hobby Stock by Thiesen was also full of accidents. Lukas Short was able to avoid the bloodbath and record his first victory in Davenport. Kaden Staley took second place ahead of Karter Miles, Jordan Miles and Shawn Kraft.

A yellow flag in the Fred’s Towing & Cantrell’s Towing 4-cylinder race made for a green-white-checkered finish. Dustin Forbes had led every lap up to that point. Now he had Cyle Hawkins and Shawn McDermott on his bumper for the final two laps.

Forbes held on to his lead and secured his first Davenport win of the year. Hawkins finished second, McDermott third. Alex Hayes and Trent Lebarge rounded out the top five.

Next Friday, July 12^thAll six weekly stock car classes will be in action. Davenport Speedway will also be hosting Christmas in July, with a candy cane raffle and other activities planned.
