Courtyard has special meaning for Sun City West Club and residents

A covered, flat area borders the north side of the Automotive/Restoration Club building. For the thousands of Sun City West residents who drive past the ARC building, this is simply an area where cool cars are parked.

For ARC members and some others, however, it is more than that. It is an area that holds cherished memories and also gives people a chance to reflect and meditate.

This area is known as “Anna’s Courtyard.” Longtime ARC member Don Scheidt provided the funds that made the courtyard possible. The plaque in the center of the court says it all: “In recognition of my beloved wife and the SCW community who enriched our retirement…Don Scheidt.” Don passed away earlier this year in February after 52 years of marriage to Anna. The agreement to build the courtyard with RCSCW was made in 2014 and the courtyard was completed in 2016. The Rec Centers provided the funds for the large canopy.

The courtyard consists of a large brick paved area, a semi-circular flower box wall that surrounds the front, and a large lawn. Benches scattered around the area have nameplates in honor of deceased loved ones. Two blue benches were placed by Anna’s sister in honor of her deceased son.

It is not uncommon to see someone sitting in the shade on one of the benches for an extended period of time, taking a break from walking or seeking a place of rest for some reason. Just a few steps from the sound of pistons, valves and carburetors, solace, reflection and spiritual bliss can be found right outside ARC’s door.
