Mavis Miller is no PTA mom. She has enough on her plate with her spirited seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, a demanding job at a nonprofit, and the complexities of a multigenerational household. So no one is more surprised than Mavis when she caves to Trisha Holbrook, the longtime, slightly intimidating PTA president, and suddenly takes the reins of the school’s brand-new DEI committee.

As one of the few black parents at this California elementary school, Mavis tries to convince herself that this is an opportunity for real change. But things go awry at the first meeting when the new principal’s plans infuriate Trisha. Later that evening, when Mavis spots Trisha in yellow rubber gloves and boots, lugging cleaning supplies and huge black garbage bags to her waiting minivan, it’s only natural that her mind wanders to places it surely wouldn’t go in daylight.

However, Principal Smith doesn’t show up for work the next morning and has been missing since the meeting. Determined to get to the bottom of the matter, Mavis, along with the school psychologist with the big forearms (see, that’s remarkable), launches an investigation that will challenge her views on parenting, friendship, and elementary school policy.

It’s Elementary is brilliantly written, quick-witted, escapist fun that perfectly captures the lengths parents will go to give their children the best – all wrapped up in a mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end.
