A woman was partially paralyzed after attending a concert in New York in April.

According to the IndependentBird Piché, 24, was attending Australian band Trophy Eyes’ show at Mohawk Place in Buffalo, New York, on April 30 when she suffered a “catastrophic spinal cord injury” after a band member jumped into the crowd.

A loved one who set up a GoFundMe page for Piché revealed that the concertgoer had to undergo extensive surgery and “has a long recovery ahead of her and will need all the help she can get.”

In a statement to PEOPLE, Mohawk Place said the venue has “a very strict policy against stage diving and crowd surfing.”

A spokesperson for Mohawk Place also noted, “Signs are posted throughout the venue and a notice was included in the emails regarding this show with the show promoter and the band themselves. Our policies and proven procedures include a complete show stop on stage diving, which was implemented during this incident.”

PEOPLE also reached out to Trophy Eyes management and GoFundMe organizers for comment, but they did not immediately respond.

“It’s too early to know her prognosis, but after she’s released from the hospital, she will need to go to a rehabilitation facility. During that time, she will obviously not be able to work,” Stephanie Brown continued in the GoFundMe page description. “Bird recently started running, and in the featured photo, she was in second place in her age group!”

A family friend said that although Piché had regained feeling in her fingers, her neck was broken.

Leo Wolters Tejera, who was also present at the show, said: WKBW Earlier this month: “You could tell right away when the singer entered the crowd, the video stopped. We knew immediately that something was wrong.”

“Her neck was definitely broken and as of today she has feeling in her arms. She can use her fingers and hands and stuff,” Tejera added. “Her fine motor skills are a little rough, but the surgeon said that’s normal because of the surgery and the anesthesia.”

Meanwhile, Trophy Eyes released a statement on May 3 saying the “situation has deeply shocked us all.”
