France arrests six people for racist attacks on singer Aya Nakamura at the Paris Olympics

French authorities have temporarily arrested six people as part of an investigation into French-Malian singer Aya Nakamura for racist insults following reports that she might sing at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, prosecutors said on Friday.

The six were arrested on Tuesday after being “identified during an investigation into inciting hatred online,” said a source in the prosecutor’s office who asked not to be identified.

They were released the following day, the source said, adding that investigators also examined materials seized during searches.

Nakamura, 29, was at the centre of a political storm after President Emmanuel Macron suggested that the singer of Djadja could appear at the Olympic Games on July 26.

Right-wing politicians and conservatives attacked her, accusing her of “vulgarity” and a lack of respect for the French language.

Police launched an investigation after anti-racism group LICRA flagged numerous racist online messages against Nakamura in March.

She also called for a blockade of the extreme right before the final round of parliamentary elections this weekend.

“I am able to understand and know the meaning of racism in our country,” Nakamura wrote on the social media platform X.

“Now I understand that my position as an artist requires me to speak out because this is an important moment for all of us,” she said.

“That is why we will all go to the polls on Sunday and vote against the one extreme that we condemn, because there is only one.”
