The 2025 R-Series “retractable” models are oversized teardrop models with an interior that is worth every penny!

North America has always been known for its love of RVs, trailers and camper vans. Well, this time we’re in Canada. Here we meet the 2025 Alto R-Series range from Safari Condo.

Guys, the name Safari Condo probably sounds familiar to you. Just this year they introduced one of the most aerodynamic caravans on the market, the A-Series, where the “A” stands for “Aerodynamic.”

In the R series, the “R” stands for nothing other than “retractable,” which describes half the story of the Alto range. In fact, this is as good a place as any to begin our journey of discovery into the R-Series, and what the “retractable” is all about has to do with the way Safari Condo built this range with a retractable roof.

However, the two floor plans you see in the image gallery are based on the traditional teardrop shape, and it takes a bit of ingenuity to fit something like that with a movable roof. This magic comes from a roof that lifts up to reveal side panels that raise the height of the RV well beyond the average human height. Yes, you can stand in these teardrops.

There are two floorplans available for 2025, but to make it easier to understand, I’ll stick to one of them; both are shown in the image gallery, though. As for the unit I chose to describe, the R1713 is the beauty for the job. It’s also the largest of the two models with 60 cubic feet of space, but also the lightest, weighing just 1,949 pounds (884 kg). Oh, and just so we’re on the same page here, prices start at $51,209 Canadian, which is about $37,600 American (at the current exchange rate). Sounds like I’ll have to make a trip to the border or just find one at a dealer near me.

Overall, the shells of these babies are made of good old and timeless aluminum, hence the rather lightweight design. While driving, Safari Condo claims that these pups spit out a drag coefficient 75% lower than that of “traditional 16′ caravans.” We owe part of this magic to the waste water tanks built into the frame.

But it’s not until we finally reach the X on our map or campsite that we can truly experience all the magic of the Safari Condo. After stabilizing your unit, unhitching your vehicle, and taking in the sights and sounds of the world around you, it’s time to open the proverbial roof and enter our living space.

Once we do, we find ourselves in the middle of a home on wheels that has everything you could want inside. Since this oversized, teardrop-shaped unit has movable walls, the outdoor kitchen we’re normally used to seeing in an RV of this type isn’t there.

The interior, however, offers a kitchen block with everything you need to prepare three-course meals. There’s a stove with two hotplates, a refrigerator and even a sink with a faucet. Did you happen to spot the microwave or all those pull-out drawers? This is also the room you immediately see when you enter the R1713.

To the right of the galley, Safari Condo has a dining nook, and considering this unit can accommodate up to four guests, one might have guessed that this feature is modular. Imagine having breakfast, lunch or dinner in this space, all the while keeping a view of the world outside.

At the other end of the R1713, a large beam-to-beam bed is available to future owners. But the real trick is that this space is also modular, and can easily be converted into a day lounge or just two single beds if required.

I come across campers every day and if there’s one thing you don’t see every day in a teardrop, it’s a damn bathroom! Well, the R1713 and its brothers all have that feature and the convenience of this creature is simply unbeatable in a park full of people or in absolutely wild weather. The wet bathroom is located to the left of the entrance; it’s the cabin you see in the pictures.

As for the magic we can’t see, there’s an ultra-quiet heating system and water heater, an auxiliary battery, a monitor, 100L (26 gallons) of fresh water and countless options and extra features to choose from. Up to 440W of solar panel power can be brought along, bike racks too.

For the rest of our time together, or while you scroll through the gallery, stand in the center of what you see and feel the breeze rushing through the device, hear the birds chirping in the trees outside, or the leaves rustling in the wind. Better yet, find a retailer that stocks one of these babies and see it in the flesh.
