Rotary Club awards scholarships worth ,000 to local students

Each year, the Rotary Club of Alameda awards academic scholarships to outstanding students from Alameda high schools. This year, over $16,000 in academic scholarships were awarded based on academic achievement, community involvement, extracurricular activities, financial need, and quality of the oral interview.

This year’s winners were: Leo Barrantes (St. Joseph’s Notre Dame), Ashley Carreno (SJND), Christian Chiu (Alameda Community Learning Center), Alexis Dollar (SJND), Winnie Gas (Alameda Science and Technology Institute), Hannah Kim (ASTI), Kathy Le (Encinal High School), Nina Leach (EHS), Henry Lee (ASTI), Allen Liao (EHS), Christopher Nguyen (ACLC), Phuong Nguyen (ACLC), Justice Petersen (EHS), Selma Snagic (AHS), Frankie Wu (ASTI) and Samuel Yonas (ACLC).

These outstanding young scholars and community members plan to attend UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UCLA, Stanford, Cal Poly, University of Pennsylvania, NYU Tisch School of Arts and University of Rochester. They have already demonstrated exceptional leadership and community involvement here in Alameda, Rotary officials said, noting that the organization is “thrilled to award these scholarships to such a deserving group of students.”
