Who is Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen – and what is his next project with Bad Bunny?

Before the groundbreaking ceremony working on BridgertonVan Dusen worked as an assistant to Rhimes, which eventually gave him the opportunity to work for Grey’s Anatomy. He eventually worked on other shows for Rhimes’ production company Shondaland, including Grey’s Anatomy spin off Private practiceand was co-executive producer at Scandal. Currently, Van Dusen is the creator and executive producer of Bridgertonand served as showrunner for seasons one and two.

Similar to our favorite Bridgerton Couples, Chris also found his happy ending. Chris is married to Bryan Van Dusen and the couple has three adorable daughters together.

Chris and Bryan met at a West Hollywood Gay bar through mutual friends in 2005. The two married in 2017 and are now fathers of three daughters, two of them twins, according to Out Magazine. Chris’ own family life reportedly influenced the wholesome and heartwarming stories about the family in Bridgerton.

He wants more LGBT storylines in Bridgerton

While Van Dusen is the showrunner for Bridgerton In the first season, we saw queer representation through the character of Sir Henry Granville, played by Julian Ovenden, and his friendship with the second eldest Bridgerton brother Benedict. Van Dusen mentioned in a 2022 interview with Out that he included this element of visibility in the series to represent “tolerance in an intolerant time,” and that he hopes to expand on this in the future.

At Bridgerton Season three, part two, there is a possible queer relationship between Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Doddand Michaela Stirling (originally Michael Stirling in the novels), played by Masali Baduza. At the same time, Benedict, played by Luke Thompson, experiences a tender moment with his potential new lover Paul Suarez, played by Lucas Aurelio.
Showrunner Jess Brownell revealed that the decision to include these relationships came out of reverence for the original novel, but she “really wanted a story about a part of the queer experience,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

He produces a show with Bad Bunny

In 2023, Van Dusen recorded a series adaptation of the bestselling young adult novel In the end both die by Adam Silvera. Notably, it is also a queer romance with Latino main characters.

Van Dusen came on board for In the end both die after serving as showrunner for the first two seasons of BridgertonHe told Deadline that he chose this series adaptation because it was the kind of project he wanted to do after Bridgerton.

This adaptation enjoyed great demand and was eventually picked up by Netflix, with Van Dusen serving as co-writer and executive producer through his company. Bad Bunny is also an executive producer.

He is working on another book adaptation

Van Dusen is working on a TV adaptation of the newly published romance novel Girls abroad by Elle Kennedy. He is collaborating with A24 and Pacesetter Productions on this project. It is a coming-of-age story of self-discovery, romance and mystery.

The main character is Abbey Bly, who is given the chance to escape the restrictions of her father, a “retired rock star,” and study in London. Naturally, she jumps at the chance, and chaos ensues in the form of crushes, forbidden love, and a royal scandal. Van Dusen will be the executive producer and showrunner of this adaptation.
