A new Batman series about Max is no longer making progress

This fall, Max’s original series, The Penguin, will help bridge the gap between The Batman and The Batman Part II. However, Max will no longer be continuing the second planned spin-off series, which will focus on Arkham Asylum.

According to Variety, Arkham Asylum was supposed to be Max’s second series in the Batman continuity. Antonio Campos was previously slated to write and showrunner Arkham Asylum in 2022. But after two years of development, Max has decided not to continue Campos’ version of the series. While the outlet notes that Max may eventually follow up with a separate Arkham Asylum series, the originally planned series is dead for now.

Before the second spin-off of The Batman focused on Arkham Asylum, a series was originally announced that would focus on the Gotham City Police Department. In 2020, Boardwalk Empire creator Terrence Winter was signed on as a writer and executive producer on the series before leaving the project due to creative differences. Winter’s successor Joe Barton also left the spin-off for the same reason.

In 2022, the series was reimagined to focus on Arkham Asylum, the maximum security mental health facility that houses many of Batman’s most dangerous enemies. During his appearance on The Cyber Nerds, The Batman director Matt Reeves described the spin-off series as follows: “What would happen in the world of Arkham if you leaned into our film and some of the characters and their origins… almost towards the idea of… it’s like a horror movie or a haunted house that Arkham is. The idea, again the way Gotham is a character in the film, I really want Arkham to exist as a character. You go into that environment and encounter these characters in a way that feels really fresh.”

Reeves will probably also use Arkham Asylum in “The Batman Part II,” which will be released on October 2, 2026.
