Jack Draper surprises defending champion Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s Stadium to secure a famous win ahead of Wimbledon

Jack Draper put in the performance of his life, beating world number two Carlos Alcaraz 7:6 (7:3) 6:3 and knocking the defending champion out of the Queen’s tournament.

In the first nine games of the first set, the duo were neck and neck.

The world number 2 had a chance to break Draper in the tenth set, but his British rival recovered and kept the set alive.

At 6:6 the match went to a tiebreak and that’s when Draper came to life.

The British No. 1 won the first set in style and won the tiebreak 7-3, thanks in part to his outstanding serve game.

Draper lost his two previous encounters with Alcaraz, but the Briton held on to his serve and took a 2-1 lead in the second set as his Spanish opponent grew increasingly frustrated.

Things got even better for Draper, who had the first break point of the match after an hour and 18 minutes.

He made no mistakes and played an excellent backhand to take a 4-2 lead in the second set.

In the next game, Draper almost lost his lead, but the 22-year-old survived a break point and was just a stone’s throw away from victory.

Draper had several chances to win the game, but Alcaraz showed his class and kept the contest alive.

However, the Briton held his serve and secured the biggest win of his career so far.

Draper was delighted to achieve a memorable victory in front of his grandfather, who recently turned 80.

“It was a really tough match. I knew Carlos was the defending champion and won Wimbledon last year,” he said.

“He’s an incredible talent and so great for the sport, so I had to go out and play really well.

“Luckily I did, so thank you.

“There is no place I would rather be right now than with my family and friends. The British support has been incredible.

“I want to continue playing here and really wanted to come back.

“I have my grandfather here at Under Armour. He just turned 80 and is doing well.
