Two people rescued from Lake Michigan; one of them still in critical condition

MUSKEGON, Michigan – Muskegon police said the two people rescued from high waves in Pere Marquette Park Friday afternoon were a 13-year-old female and a 30-year-old man, the latter of whom is in serious condition.

This is an update on initial information from the Muskegon City Fire Department that a call for assistance from a swimmer was received at Muskegon County 911 at approximately 4:30 p.m.

A Muskegon Police press release late Friday night said the 13-year-old girl was pulled from the water by other beachgoers. The 30-year-old man was rescued by the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol.

Both the woman and the man are from Saginaw, the news release said. They were taken to Trinity Hospital. The woman is expected to make a full recovery, while the man remains in critical condition.

“We would like to remind all beachgoers to use caution when swimming in Lake Michigan,” police said. “Always be aware of changing weather and surf conditions. Swimming can be particularly difficult near structures such as the surf arms.”

Early Friday afternoon, a Muskegon Fire Department official told FOX 17 that the Coast Guard and Muskegon County Sheriff’s dive team were initially en route in case of a rescue, but were quickly called off.
