VOSD Podcast: Supreme Court upholds camping ban in San Diego

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last week that bans on camping for the homeless do not constitute cruel and unusual punishment, overturning lower courts’ rulings. The decision, which was eagerly awaited by politicians across California, opens the door to tougher measures against the homeless, even when shelter is unavailable.

In this week’s podcast, our hosts explain how this decision changes—or doesn’t change—how local governments handle the homelessness crisis in San Diego County.

Hosts Bella Ross and Jakob McWhinney delve into the history behind San Diego’s ban on drinking a cold beer on the beach. Luckily for locals, Ross and McWhinney have put together a handy map of the parks where locals can still grab a beer.

President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate has already begun to influence politics in San Diego. Editor in Chief Scott Lewis describes the reaction of an influential Democratic fundraiser. Since the podcast was recorded, however, U.S. Congressman Scott Peters has also expressed his displeasure with the Biden campaign’s efforts to put out the Level Four political fire.

Finally, the crew talks about the recently announced increase in water prices that never happened… or is it the increase in water prices that will happen?
