Safaree leaves “Love & Hip-Hop”

In a new interview, Safaree announces that he has left the popular reality series Love & Hip Hop after eight years.

The entertainer was a prominent character in various versions of the popular reality TV series, which aired in Atlanta, Hollywood, Miami and New York versions. His exit from the franchise was due to exclusivity issues, he said on the podcast “We in Miami.”

“I walked away,” he said. “They’re filming now, but I didn’t even sign again. I would have done it again, but these lawyers and everyone involved want all these exclusive rights. They want to tie me down and say, ‘Okay, only here. You can’t do anything else.’ They have to pay me to sit.”

Wanting to explore new opportunities, Safaree shared his frustrations with the show’s audience. Over the course of the series, he experienced fights, celebrity relationships, and viral antics.

“With ‘Love & Hip Hop,’ I just don’t like that people who watch it feel like they know me,” he explained. “I’m somewhere and people see me and then they’re like, ‘Behave! Stop it!’ What? Get the fuck out of my face, lady. These people really hold on to what they see.”

Safaree joined Love & Hip Hop in 2016. While filming Love & Hip Hop, he met former reality star Erica Mena, with whom he has a child.

Despite his complaints, Safaree acknowledged the positive effects Love & Hip Hop on his career. “I can’t tell you how many doors it opened for me, how many opportunities and how many extra eyes I got,” he said. “At first I really didn’t try. And then as I got further along and felt like I had taken it on, it helped me a lot.”

Safaree rose to fame through his appearances on four versions of “Love & Hip Hop.” Before joining the show, he was best known as Nicki Minaj’s dating partner; the couple split in 2014.

His performances on We In Miami follow performances by Minaj’s sister Ming Lunali last week. The singer spoke about growing up with Nicki Minaj and not wanting to be referred to as her younger sister anymore.
