Boys and Girls Club of Toledo renovates the Homer Hanham Club

The Boys and Girls Club of Toledo recently completed its $1.7 million renovation of the Homer Hanham Club.

The doors of the renovated club at 2250 N. Detroit Avenue opened at noon on June 3rd and the children flocked to the new space.

Renovations at the Hanham Club include a new entrance area that provides staff with a better view of the entrance, new changing rooms and toilets, and freshly painted, colorful walls. The renovations also include an updated fire and security system and new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

The new changing room serves as a gateway to the CO mining pool.

This was the first time the building had been renovated in about 30 years, so updating the building was critical to the ever-changing needs of children in the Toledo area.

The changes also included the return of a trusted friend to the club.

Returning to the Boys and Girls Club after an 18-year stay at the Toledo Lucas County Main Library is Lily Leaper, one of the hundreds of fiberglass frogs decorated by local artists as part of the 2001 “It’s Reigning Frogs” public art project. Lily Leaper was sponsored and painted by Chas F. Mann Painting Co. Stanley Files. Lily is one of two frogs, including Uncle Amphibian, signed by former Presidents George W. Bush and Vicente Fox of Mexico during a visit to Toledo in September 2001.

Donated permanently to the club after being signed by President Chas F. Mann, the frog was loaned to the library where it remained for many years. This June it returned to the Boys and Girls Club where it began its new duties as lifeguard at the Homer Hanham Club CO Miniger Pool.
