The Utah Hockey Club finally got a taste of the ice at the Delta Center.

Many of the organization’s young talents participated in a practice game on Friday to round out this year’s development camp. More than 5,000 new fans of the hockey club came to see the team’s first outing on the ice.

“It was crazy,” said Cole Beaudoin, Utah’s 2024 first-round draft choice, after the practice game. “It was incredible to hear the fans cheering when we scored.”

The players were split into two teams, with Beaudoin and Tij Iginla, also from the 2024 first round, landing on the victorious White team, which defeated Black team by a convincing 11-2 after two 25-minute periods and a five-minute 3-on-3 period.

“It was a fun game with a lot of skating and good skills,” Iginla said. “Today the turnout was great, we’re really happy about that.”

The star of the match was Daniil But, who played in the first round of the 2023 competition, scoring a hat-trick in the first period, making his total of four goals that afternoon.

Iginla opened the second period with a goal for White on an unassisted shot and proved another standout player throughout the practice game with his impressive skating and offensive decision-making.

As the franchise’s first-ever draft selection, the 17-year-old phenom received a warm welcome from fans when it was announced that he would be starting in place of White.

“It was really cool to hear so much cheering when my name was called,” Iginla said. “I think the fans have been very welcoming to the hockey club and to me as well. So it looks like we’re going to have the best fans in the league and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Sam Lipkin, Matthew Morden and Will Skahan, who was selected in the second round of the competition in 2024, each contributed a goal and two assists for White, whose defensive and goaltending performance thwarted almost every scoring opportunity for Black.

As for Black – who fell into a 5-0 hole early on and never recovered – Terrell Goldsmith and Jonathan Castagna each scored goals, while Owen Allard, Noel Nordh and Miko Matikka all provided assists.
