DOJ: Missing Michigan girl found in Indiana – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WISH) – A 30-year-old man was arrested nearly a month ago after he was found with a 16-year-old girl missing from Michigan in a Hammond, Indiana, apartment, the U.S. Department of Justice reported this week.

The names of the man and the girl have not been released publicly.

The operation was part of the US Marshals Service’s Operation We Will Find You 2 from May 20 to June 24. The operation found 200 children described as critically missing, at-risk runaways and abducted juveniles across the United States. The Indiana case was listed as one of the “most significant recoveries.”

The girl was reported missing on January 11th. Her home was in Edwardsburg, Michigan, with a legal guardian. This is a village near South Bend, Indiana. It is about a 90-minute drive from Hammond.

“During the investigation, responding personnel learned that the child had either attempted to escape from the adult male on multiple occasions or had intended to do so. The child was in a difficult and dangerous situation, particularly since he had traveled across state lines and was now in a new state, far from where he was first reported missing,” the department’s Western District of Michigan said in a statement.

Authorities said the man also posted photos of cash and firearms on his social media profile, including a photo of him pointing a gun with an empty magazine at the girl.

The department said the girl was found unharmed on June 13 and handed over to child welfare services.

The man was arrested, but the Justice Department did not disclose in its press release on Monday whether and what charges would be brought against him.

Hammond is a city of 76,575 residents in northwest Indiana, bordering Illinois and Lake Michigan.
