Michigan State C comments on the unusual 2024 NBA Draft

The 2024 NBA Draft was one of the most uneventful in recent memory.

This draft class lacked the talent of a generation that can be found in every draft today, and there were a number of unexpected picks in the first round.

For example, former Michigan State basketball rival Zach Edey was ranked No. 9, a spot some consider too high for the two-time national player of the year, while others say it is too low.

Spartan center Carson Cooper also said he was “surprised.”

“It was a crazy draft,” Cooper told reporters at the 2024 Moneyball Pro-Am last week. “They had — I think there were about four or five French guys picked in the first round, and they really didn’t take anyone over 22, 10 picks. It was crazy. When Dalton Knecht went 17, that was crazy to me. I thought he was one of the best players in the draft. … (Terrence) Shannon, too. It’s crazy to see these teams now taking the youth — the potential over what they can do for you now.”

No Spartans were selected in this year’s draft, but former Michigan State guard Tyson Walker and forward Malik Hall have joined the Phoenix Suns and Charlotte Hornets Summer League teams, respectively.

However, Spartan center Xavier Booker could be selected in the first round in next year’s draft. Guard Jaden Akins and a few others may also have a good chance of getting a spot in the draft.
