Michigan State’s Coen Carr is ready to play any position he needs

Coen Carr, a sophomore wing at Michigan State University, is another player returning next season who is expected to make a bigger impact.

Carr’s versatility would allow him to play multiple positions, a role he has grown accustomed to in his first season with the Spartans.

“I’m ready for it. I kind of had to do it last year – learn two different positions,” Carr said last week on opening night of the 2024 Moneyball Pro-Am. “At the beginning of the year I was at 3, then in the middle I kind of switched to 4. And by the end of the year I was back to 3. So, just adjusting to things like that, yeah, I feel like I’ll probably have to do that again this year.”

Carr doesn’t limit himself to positions because he understands that the game has evolved beyond that.

“I’ll play whatever they ask me to play, wherever I have to play,” he said. “I mean, I’m not into that position stuff, I feel like there are no positions in basketball, especially in the NBA. So yeah, I’m willing to play anything.”

As his team’s fan-favorite dunker, Carr is known for his athleticism, but he’s much more than that. In the offseason, he’s worked on rounding out his game.

“Really just my shooting,” Carr said. “Shooting and ball handling. I’m trying to be on the ball more instead of standing in the corner without the ball so much. I’m just trying to improve my game on all three levels. … And get stronger, too.”

Carr played all 35 games for the Spartans in his freshman season, averaging 3.1 points per game and 1.8 rebounds while averaging 11.6 minutes per game.
