A York County man charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his cellmate at a state prison near Harrisburg allegedly punched and kicked the man in the face several times after an ongoing argument.

Shaquille Tyrin Gibson, 30, was charged Tuesday following an investigation into the death of 57-year-old Bernard Grover, also known as Kevin Beattie, of Philadelphia at the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill, state police said.

According to the indictment, Gibson told investigators he waited until after curfew on Monday at around 9:30 p.m. before attacking Grover. He allegedly admitted to hitting Grover eight to 10 times while his cellmate lay in his lower bunk.

Gibson told investigators that after the first attack, he paused when he heard Grover gasping and gasping for air, but then kicked him in the face eight to 10 times with his right foot, wearing his prison boots.

Gibson told investigators he pulled a cloth over Gover’s face to hide what he had done and stood in the door and front window of the cell the next morning to block guards’ view, charging documents say.

He allegedly told guards that Grover would not come out to get his morning dose of insulin. After Gibson left the cell around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday to perform his normal morning shift, a guard pulled the sheets off Grover and discovered blood on his face, marks from injuries and blood splattered on the cell wall, court records show.

According to court records, Gibson was transferred to SCI Camp Hill in March 2022 after pleading guilty to robbery in December 2021.

Grover, who has been housed at SCI Camp Hill since February 2023, was serving a prison sentence for burglary in Philadelphia.

A preliminary hearing in Gibson’s case is scheduled for July 11.
