An Independence Day celebration in Chesterfield Township ended with a house fire and a firefighter being treated for heat exhaustion, officials said.

On July 4 at around 10:45 p.m., firefighters responded to a house fire in the 26000 block of Fairwood Drive, near 21 Mile Road and Interstate 94. Investigators found that the homeowner was setting off fireworks in the driveway when debris fell on a shed next to the garage, sparking the fire.

“The fire started in the shed and then spread to the garage and house,” said Brian Bassett, Chesterfield Township Public Safety Director. “We were on the scene within two to three minutes. We were able to put out the fire quickly, but the house is heavily damaged.”

The homeowners were not injured. A firefighter who was treated for heat exhaustion is expected to recover, Bassett said.

Fire crews from New Baltimore, Selfridge Air National Guard Base and the communities of Macomb and Lenox assisted on scene.
