Chris Pine was surprised by the new Star Trek 4 update

Chris Pine has shared his reaction to the news that a fourth Star Trek film is still in development.

In an interview with Business Insider, the Dungeons & Dragons star revealed that he was surprised by the news that “The Flight Attendant” creator Steve Yockey had joined the project as a new screenwriter (via Variety).

“There was news about the arrival of a new writer. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong or they decided to redirect,” he said.

When asked if he would ever consider reprising his role as Captain James T. Kirk for the films, the actor replied, “Honestly, I don’t know. As always with Trek, I’ll just wait and see.”

Pine first played the role of Captain Kirk (originally played by William Shatner) in Star Trek in 2009 before reprising the role in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016).

A sequel to Star Trek Beyond has reportedly been in the works since the film’s release nearly eight years ago, but it has encountered numerous setbacks since then.

Director Matt Shakman left the project in August 2022, causing Paramount to delay the film indefinitely and remove it from its release calendar. Screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer subsequently left the film in September 2023 to direct Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.

However, Beer insisted that a fourth Star Trek film was “still on track” despite long delays, and a report from Variety in March confirmed that Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot were still involved in the film.

Paramount has not confirmed any further details about the film, but it is likely that Pine will return for the fourth installment along with his co-stars Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).
