How to stay safe on Indiana beaches

It’s lake season and Indiana residents are planning road trips to the nearest “great” lake: Lake Michigan.

It’s one of the five Great Lakes and the second largest by volume — and it includes sand dunes that have formed over thousands of years. It’s the M in “HOMES,” in case you learned that acronym in elementary school. The lake has several public beaches in Indiana, most of which are open from 6 a.m. to 9 or 11 p.m., according to the National Park Service.

Here you will find some useful information about Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes.

How deep is Lake Michigan? How deep are the other Great Lakes?

Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes by volume. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates its maximum depth to be about 925 feet. Lake Michigan holds 1,180 cubic miles of water, making it the second largest of the five Great Lakes.

Here you can see how deep each lake is:

How to stay safe at the lake

As of June 19, there have been 28 drownings in the Great Lakes this year, the South Bend Tribune reported. Ten of those occurred in Lake Michigan.

Our partners in the north have recently put together a guide with rules of conduct for swimming in the lake. Read it below.
