Manuel Ugarte has emerged as Manchester United’s most coveted midfielder this summer and is showing what contribution he could make to Erik ten Hag’s team during his Copa America campaign.
With his excellent defensive qualities, Ugarte is exactly what United need alongside Kobbie Mainoo after a season marked by some worrying issues in midfield defensively.
But now Ugarte is considered the best midfielder in the Copa America, which could mean United will have to act more quickly if a deal is to be made.

After a rocky start to the season in Paris, there may have been doubts about United’s desire to sign Ugarte this summer, but with the midfield in desperate need of toughening up, there are few better options than the Uruguayan when he is on form.
Ugarte is currently taking part in the Copa America and has featured prominently for Uruguay as the team has won three of their three matches so far ahead of their quarter-final against Brazil on Sunday.
During the tournament, Ugarte was a shining example in central midfield and it has now been highlighted that he was indeed the best midfielder of the tournament so far.
This is according to WhoScored’s match ratings, which show Ugarte as the best midfielder so far in the Copa America, beating Moises Caicedo and Federico Valverde.

How good was Ugarte?
In the three games so far, Ugarte has made 18 tackles, six interceptions, five clearances and one block, playing a key role in Uruguay’s impressive tournament performance so far.
Last time out, in the 1-0 win over the USA, Ugarte scored 8.08/10 as he dominated the host country’s midfield and will be hoping to salvage something from the tournament.
The Uruguayan media have praised him highly throughout the tournament – and for good reason.
He seems to have rediscovered the form that made him so sought after in the last summer transfer window, but if he continues like this, United could find it difficult to get him for the reportedly low prices.
Therefore, Dan Ashworth and Co. need to agree on a deal with PSG sooner rather than later, before they increase the price or he attracts other interested parties.
