Madonna’s world tour is the highest-grossing tour of all time in 2024 (but Taylor Swift will probably win)

Top line

A Madonna tour that has been criticized for its late start and lack of “razzle-dazzle” spark is still the year’s highest-grossing so far, according to Pollstar data, although Taylor Swift’s “Era’s Tour,” which hits Europe, will likely eclipse it once box office numbers are available.

Key data

Madonna’s Celebration Tour, which began last year, has grossed $178.1 million so far, with an average ticket price of $208.85 and an average attendance of 13,378 people per show, the live music trade magazine said in its half-year report.

Bad Bunny, who held the record for the most streamed artist in one day in Spotify history before Taylor Swift broke it in April of this year, is a close second with his 48-stop Most Wanted Tour, which grossed $174.5 million.

In third place is Mexican singer Luis Miguel, with gross sales of $169.4 million during his eponymous tour, which has so far completed its legs in Latin America, the United States and Canada this year and began its European shows on June 28.

U2’s Las Vegas appearance, the first at the now legendary Sphere venue, grossed $134.7 million from just 15 tour dates in 2024 (plus 25 in 2023), making it the fourth highest-grossing tour of the year and the one with the highest average ticket price of $352.86 per ticket.

Karol G landed in fifth place with her Mañana Será Bonito Tour, which has grossed over $110 million so far this year, continues throughout Europe and ends in Brazil in September.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour did not make this year’s list, according to Pollstar, because she did not allow trade publications to release her official box office figures for The Eras Tour. However, the group used stadium capacities and potential gross estimates to name The Eras Tour as the first tour to cross the billion-dollar mark on its 2023 year-end charts.

While Pollstar has not provided a mid-year estimate for The Era tour in 2024, it predicts the tour will gross another $1 billion later in the year, so it will likely have grossed over $2 billion by the time it ends in December.

Important background

Three separate lawsuits have been filed against the pop star for false advertising, unfair and deceptive business practices and other allegations after she allegedly began her concerts in Los Angeles, Brooklyn and Washington DC hours after they were scheduled to begin.

Big number

1.6 million. That’s how many people attended a free Madonna concert in Rio de Janeiro in May at the end of the Celebration Tour. The organizer Live Nation described it as “the largest single concert ever put on by an artist.”

Main critics

“A pop concert is a theater of personality and craft, not of plot or character development. But a narrative this messy needed more bells and whistles,” wrote pop music critic Mikael Wood for the Los Angeles Times.
