Popular country singer announces cancer diagnosis and cancels upcoming performances

Country band The Mavericks have canceled two of their upcoming shows on July 12 and 14 in Steamboat Springs after frontman Raul Malo was diagnosed with cancer.

Meanwhile, the show has been postponed from July 13 in Denver to August 25.

The band announced the show cancellations in an Instagram post.

“Our biggest thanks for your outpouring of love and support for our brother Raul and the Malo family during this time,” the caption read. “Thanks also to @joeyblueclaw and @rscountry for handling the news with care as always.”

“As previously mentioned, unfortunately our shows in Aspen on 7/12 and Steamboat Springs on 7/14 have to be cancelled due to follow-up treatment and our show in Denver on 7/13 will be rescheduled to 8/25. Refunds for the cancelled shows will be issued automatically through the official points of purchase,” the caption continued. “Tickets for the Denver show will remain valid for the new date, but we understand some people may not be able to make it then, so if you require a refund, those are available from your point of purchase now through the next 2 weeks. We apologize for any inconvenience, but thank you for your understanding and look forward to dancing with you again soon.

“We apologize for any inconvenience, but thank you for your understanding and look forward to dancing with you again soon,” the post concluded.

Malo, 58, first announced his cancer diagnosis in a video a few days earlier.

“The last few years since we’ve been out here, we’ve been really focused on our health,” Malo said in the video. “We’ve been taking care of ourselves a little bit better. We’ve been taking care of ourselves a little bit better and really trying to do everything right as far as diet and so on. So part of the health journey is getting checked out. Go to a doctor, get a physical exam and start doing that.”

“And that led to another appointment with a gastrointestinal specialist who did a CAT scan,” Malo continued. “And that showed two cancerous spots.”

Malo said his doctors will begin chemotherapy after July 4, which will be one of the easiest treatments they will give him.

“Most people are working and going about their daily lives as if nothing happened,” he said. “So let’s hope for the best and hope it continues like this.”

“We will fight this with everything we have at our disposal,” he added. “But above all, I say this because we want you all to get checked. Go to the doctor. Take an active role in your health. That will help you fight what is ailing you.”
