Work of Love – Capital Brief

When Sir Keir Starmer will be sworn in as Britain’s 58th Prime Minister in the next few days, Australia’s 31st. Anthony Albanese will watch with interest.

Starmer’s long-awaited election victory was sealed on Friday morning after a campaign that was more coronation than electioneering. The victory was a clear one, with the Tories set to suffer the worst result in their history.

There are many parallels between the new Starmer and Australia’s incumbent. Indeed, a young friendship between the two, which began in opposition and was cemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, is now continuing in the highest offices of both countries.

Since the outgoing Rishi Sunak Although the US government called a shock election six weeks ago, Albanese and Starmer communicated regularly – albeit informally – via text message.

“I’m very much looking forward to working with them. They have very similar views to us on a number of issues,” Albanese said on Friday. “Sir Keir Starmer and I have had discussions about the possibility of him visiting that part of the world … and I expect that will happen in the coming months.”
