July 4th standoff in Michigan ends with suspect arrested

ROYAL OAK TOWNSHIP, MI — A 49-year-old man turned himself in to authorities here following a standoff in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 4, state police officials said.

Officers seized a 9mm Taurus pistol and a 20-gauge Winchester shotgun at the scene of the standoff in the 20,000 block of Mitchelldale Avenue in Royal Oak Township. The state police reported on Xformerly known as Twitter.

At 2:50 a.m., telephone dispatchers at the Detroit Regional Communication Center received a 911 call in which a man could be heard threatening to attack a woman, the state police report said.

“When police arrived at the house, dispatchers could hear him saying, ‘If the police come in here, I’ll shoot you, I’ll shoot them and I’ll shoot myself,'” the police report said.

According to state police, police officers formed a security ring around the house and then used a loudspeaker system to order all residents to leave the house with their hands raised – but to no avail.

After an hour, troopers called the victim again, state police said. Troopers then spoke with the suspect and persuaded him to turn himself in, the report said.

The suspect will remain in custody until prosecutors have reviewed the case, state police said.

“Great job by dispatchers and officers who allowed the situation to be de-escalated and safely resolved,” First Lt. Mike Shaw of the state police said in a statement.
