18-year-old killed by falling tree while cleaning up storm damage at Pittsburgh-area sports club

TRAFFORD, Pa. (KDKA) – An 18-year-old man died after a tree fell on him while cleaning up storm damage at the Trafford Sportsmen’s Club in Westmoreland County on Thursday.

Emergency services were called to the club on Winchester Road in Trafford following a logging accident which resulted in the death of the teenager.

North Huntingdon police said the 18-year-old was with a group cleaning up the fallen trees. from last week’s storm.

Last week, a tornado touched down in the country and caused major tree damage. Everyone is still cleaning up the damage. Randall Nelson, owner of Nelson Tree Company LLC, said they are overwhelmed.

“I went to school 38 years ago and that’s basically where you learn how to stay alive,” Nelson said. “It’s just such a dangerous business. I’m sorry, I heard someone was killed up here. I’ll be praying for the families, it’s just a tragedy.”

Friends and family flocked to the club on Thursday. Local residents stopped by and called the news shocking.

“If you cut down trees and don’t know what you’re doing, it can become a real problem,” said resident Jeff Johnson.

The identity of the teenager has not been disclosed.

North Huntingdon police say the investigation is ongoing.
