Cincinnati Reds defeat Yankees in New York

NEW YORK – If you think the Cincinnati Reds have been beaten up for most of the season, you should have seen the other guys in New York this week.

Not to mention the back pages of New York tabloids, which devoted vast amounts of ink and creative energy to complaining about the poor performance of the locals during the Reds’ three-game express tour of the Bronx.

Reds and Yankees trade Jonathan India Jonathan India of the Cincinnati Reds: The sale at the trade deadline “definitely concerns us a lot”

The Reds completed their most impressive road trip of the season on Thursday with an 8-4 victory at Yankee Stadium, winning a series in a month of the year against the Yankees for the first time since the 1976 World Series.

“I think this is the series that gets us where we need to be and puts us in a position where we can realistically compete for the championship,” said Reds relief pitcher Fernando Cruz after the dramatic one-point victory on Wednesday night.

With the July 30 transfer deadline looming and the Reds front office making it clear that the decision on the direction of the buyer or seller will come at the All-Star break, their 5-2 road tour of St. Louis and the Bronx may have come just in time.

While they swept the Yankees 7-3 in home runs, the Reds improved their record against the five best teams in the Major League to 12-10.

The next big item on the agenda: Over the next ten days, we’ll have to deal with some of the worst teams in the league in a home game against the Detroit Tigers, Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins that will leave only losers.

A 7-3 sprint to halftime would put them over 500 points for the first time since May 2 and would likely put them among the frontrunners in the wildcard race with 105 games left in the season and 10 games until the deadline.

“I understand the transfer window and I understand that it is less than a month away,” said manager David Bell. “But I don’t want to think about it. I’m focused on our players and our team.”

“It’s more about just playing well for all the reasons that are important to us.”

The series against the Yankees was perhaps as important to the Reds as any other game they have played so far this season – at least as important as the season series they won against the NL-leading Philadelphia Phillies and the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

It showed part of the plan the Reds had laid out to win at the beginning of the season – and some things that weren’t necessarily part of the plan.

Good pitching was the order of the day throughout the series, allowing the Reds to take the lead in every game and maintain that lead until the end, never trailing in the series.

But all those home runs? Not necessarily.

Seven different Reds scored once: Will Benson, Elly De La Cruz, Noelvi Marte, Stuart Fairchid, Nick Martini, Jonathan India and Spencer Steer.
