Death possibly linked to recalled microdosing treats is under investigation

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it is currently investigating a death that may be linked to products marketed as “microdosing treats.”

Diamond Shruumz brand microdosing chocolate bars, infused cones, and Micro-Dose and Mega-Dose/Extreme gummies were recalled in late June because they may contain muscimol, a psychoactive compound found in some mushrooms.

The FDA warns that muscimol may cause symptoms similar to those experienced by people who felt unwell after consuming Diamond Shruumz products, including seizures, central nervous system depression (including loss of consciousness, confusion, and drowsiness), agitation, abnormal heart rate, hypertension/hypotension, nausea, and vomiting.

In addition to this death, 48 people in 24 states reported becoming ill after consuming the products.

Diamond Shruumz sells its products online and in retail stores, such as tobacco and vape shops across the country. Retailers have been asked to remove the recalled products from shelves.

“Consumers should check at home and discard these products or return them to the company for a refund,” the FDA says.

The FDA recommends that anyone experiencing symptoms of illness contact their doctor or call the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222.
