Julie Andrews may not return as the voice of Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton

Penelope replaced her voice at the end of the third season

Bridgerton season 3 has finally come to an end, but could the reveal of Penelope as Lady Whistledown mean the end of Julie Andrews as narrator? We were lucky to have the Hollywood icon as the voice of Lady Whistledown since the beginning of season 1, but in the final episode, her voice was replaced by Penelope.

Now it’s been revealed that Penelope is behind Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton, meaning she no longer has to keep her voice a secret and Julie Andrews may technically no longer be needed.

About Netflix

Showrunner Jess Brownell has spoken about the future of Julie’s role in Bridgerton, revealing: “It’s Julie Andrews – I’m obsessed with her. I would hate to lose her from the show. Although in many ways she is the voice of Penelope when she was trying to hide, I also think she’s just become so iconic as the voice of Lady Whistledown. So we’re playing with different ideas in season four and people will have to wait and see where we go with it.”

Unlike the book, where Penelope stops her column after being exposed as Lady Whistledown, the series doesn’t seem to be taking the same route. Jess explained: “I think there’s more going on with Lady Whistledown. Now Penelope has to come to terms with what it’s like to be a public gossip columnist. Not only does she have to deal with the people she writes about, but she also has to take steps to take more responsibility for what she writes.

“I think accountability and authenticity are two things she’s really had to grapple with this season, and we’ll continue that thread in season four.” Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we don’t have to say goodbye to Julie Andrews forever.
