Walmart faces class action lawsuit over alleged misleading pricing practices

Walmart is facing a lawsuit alleging that the retail giant often charges higher prices at checkout than it displays on the shelves.

The class action lawsuit, led by plaintiff Yoram Kahn, accuses the world’s largest retailer of “deceptive and unfair pricing practices” that affected consumers across the country.

Kahn argued that while the price differences may be small, they add up to hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

The court found that when Kahn examined six items, the actual prices were ten to fifteen percent higher than the shelf prices.

Kahn overpaid Walmart $1.89 for those six items, nearly seven percent of his total pre-tax bill. The court noted, “To Kahn as an individual, this is undoubtedly small change, but consider Walmart’s volume of business.”

The decision on Wednesday overturned an earlier ruling by a lower court judge. Meanwhile, Walmart has announced plans to introduce digital shelf price labels in stores nationwide to improve the customer experience.

The technology was initially tested in select stores and is expected to be rolled out to 2,300 of the company’s 4,600 U.S. stores by 2026, Walmart said in a press release.
