Marvel announces Spider-Man’s death (eight times)

Recently, Marvel announced that Zeb Wells will resume his work as a writer of Amazing Spider-Manand then it seemed like Joe Kelly Wells would be next Amazing Spider-Man Author. That may still be true, but in the meantime, Marvel has announced a shocking new storyline called The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man, a ten-part Amazing Spider-Man Event, which will be written by Kelly and Justina Ireland, with illustrations by Ed McGuinness, Gleb Melnikov and others. Whether Kelly will continue as a new author Amazing Spider-Man beyond this story is uncertain (at the time when Nick Spencer left Amazing Spider-ManMarvel initially wrote a “temporary” storyline with various writers before Zeb Wells took over as the new writer for the relaunched series, so it could be a similar situation).

The new plot was teased in this week’s surprise release by Moon Knight: Khonshu’s Fist #0, suggesting that the powerful magical being Cyttorak may be involved in Spider-Man dying and being resurrected at least eight times.

Marvel's promo for

Joe Kelly was a member of the Spider-Man “Brain Trust” Amazing Spider-Man spent two years working on the series with a rotating group of writers. Kelly reworked the Rhino for the series. Kelly also helped launch a Spider-Man/Deadpool ongoing series (Kelly’s most famous comic book work is probably his work on Deadpool’s first ongoing series in 1997). Ed McGuinness, who works on the illustrations for this story arc, was famously the original artist of Kelly’s Dead Pool Run (the series made both the writer and the artists major players at Marvel).

Justina Ireland is an acclaimed science fiction writer who recently made her Marvel debut with a number of Star Wars projects, including Star Wars: Sana Starros Miniseries. Most recently she wrote the Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt Miniseries that brings Spider-Man into the current Blood Hunt Crossover. This series is obviously tied to the magical side of the Marvel Universe, which is why Ireland fits perfectly into this story.

How was this story set up in this week’s Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu?

In a background story this week Moon Knight: Khonshu’s Fist #0, Joe Kelly, Emilio Laiso, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Cory Petit, did a backstory in which a now-freed Khonshu berates the magical being known as Cyttorak (the being behind Juggernaut’s power as well as Doctoe Strange’s Crimson Bands of Cyttorak).

At the end of Khonshu’s confrontation with Cyttorak, it seems like the “blood moon” will have a more literal meaning in this upcoming storyline, and Spider-Man might be the one who gets the most blood. However, only time will tell when the storyline comes out.

In the meantime, Marvel has hinted that Zeb Wells is leaving Amazing Spider-Manit’s possible that John Romita Jr. is still around for whatever happens after Spider-Man’s eight deaths, noting in a press release, “And to find out what’s next for John Romita Jr. and Amazing Spider-Man, KEEP READING, TRUE BELIEVER!”
