COMMERCE TWP. – Edgewood Country Club’s classic golf course will host the first day of the 34th GAM Net Team Championship presented by Michigan Golf Live on Monday.
A field of 80 teams, or 160 golfers, including men, women and some family duos, will play 18 holes to a net four-ball score. At least eight teams that emerge from Monday’s play will advance to the final day of the championship on Sept. 26 at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield.
Edgewood also hosted the 32nd GAM Net Team Qualification Day two years ago.
The expertly maintained course has a par of 71 over a maximum length of 6,400 yards, has been a member club of the Golf Association of Michigan and a venue for events for many years, and has also continuously worked to modernize and improve its golf course over the years.
An ongoing $9 million capital project, which when completed will include new golf operations and golf simulator facilities and the remodeling of the clubhouse exterior and foyer, is scheduled for completion in October of this year. The new Golf Services Building opened in December of last year.
In addition, the club has redesigned its 18th hole in recent years and in 1994 had a landscaped embankment built along holes 7 through 9 to provide more privacy.
In 1989, renowned architect Art Hills undertook a major renovation of Ernest W. Way’s original design. Hills rebuilt and reshaped the greens, added strategic bunkers, and resurfaced the cart paths. Changes included bringing the lake into play near the green on hole No. 14, a 315-yard par 4. It is now considered by the club to be the course’s standout hole.
Brent Kish is the longtime PGA golf professional, Brian Hilfinger is the superintendent and Brian Bach is the general manager. For more information about Edgewood, visit edgewoodcountryclub.org
Yvette Johnson of Farmington Hills and Sean Gouda of West Bloomfield, fellow DTE players, teamed up to win the finals of the 33rd GAM Net Team Championship at Meadowbrook Country Club last fall. Among the eight teams that played in the finals last year was sponsor Bill Hobson of Michigan Golf Live.
