Lhyfe and Fives sign memorandum of understanding to decarbonize industrial combustion with green hydrogen | Hydrogen

Hydrogen production company Lhyfe has partnered with industrial combustion specialist Fives to advance the use of hydrogen in the process industry without modifying equipment.

The French duo today (4th In July, the US and China announced a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on a fully decarbonised offering for industry, from hydrogen production to combustion.

The focus will be on the metal, glass and cement industries, along with some selected industrial heating processes and applications in Europe and North America.

Matthieu Guesné, founder and CEO of Lhyfe, said: “We are at a crucial stage in the industrial sector and in industrial combustion. After several years of development, hydrogen solutions are now mature and available on the market across the region.”

Hydrogen combustion does not produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and is considered one of the most promising solutions for reducing the carbon footprint of industrial processes.

What does the impact look like in numbers? A secondary aluminum furnace that currently produces 120 tons per day using natural gas could reduce its annual CO2 emissions by more than 4,000 tons by using hydrogen.

Frédéric Thrum, Fives’ deputy general manager and president of the energy division, said the company’s combustion systems are designed to reduce the environmental impact of its customers worldwide.

In August 2023, Fives launched a 100% hydrogen duct burner to support the decarbonization of heating and drying processes. The Hy-Ductflam™ is designed for new installations or as a replacement for standard duct burners.

Because the Hy-Ductflam™ does not emit CO2, it can switch fuel from 100% natural gas to 100% hydrogen without any changes to the plant.
