Google’s upcoming Pixel 9 series will receive an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor as one of the hardware upgrades, reports leaker and Android Authority contributor Kamila Wojciechowska, citing a source familiar with the matter.
The optical under-display fingerprint sensor currently used in Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro is not known to be the fastest on the market, according to the leaker. Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology, meanwhile, is already used in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series.
Ultrasonic sensors are superior to optical sensors because they are more responsive and unlock the device faster when the finger is placed over the sensor. They are less responsive to wet and dirty fingers and unlike optical sensors, they do not emit bright light in the dark, making them convenient to use even at night.
Users have long wanted an improved fingerprint sensor on Pixel devices. According to the leaker, the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor will be available on Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL. The next-generation Pixel Fold (also known as Pixel 9 Pro Fold) will keep the capacitive fingerprint sensor in its power button.
This adds to the features and changes rumored to appear in the Pixel 9 series. It is reported that Pixel 9 will feature Samsung’s M14 OLED display to offer improved brightness and longevity. Pixel 9 has reportedly been unofficially sold in Algeria and leaked benchmarks suggest a modest performance improvement over Pixel 8.
The icing on the cake was a series of leaked images showing the upcoming devices from different angles and revealing a pill-shaped camera cutout on the back. Recently, a leaked hands-on video appeared showing the Pixel 9 in pink.
Google has officially announced that the Pixel 9 series will be unveiled at its Made By Google event next month, where the company is also expected to launch the Pixel Watch 3.
