North Dakota death under investigation, possibly linked to edible mushrooms, health officials say – InForum

BISMARCK – Health officials in North Dakota are warning residents about recalled edible mushrooms that may be linked to a death in the state.

According to a press release from the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, Prophet Premium Blends’ Diamond Shruumz products were recalled on June 28 and residents were advised not to eat, sell or serve the products.

The products include chocolate bars, wafers, gummy bears and similar products, which may still be available online or at retailers that sell hemp products and smoking and vaping products, the press release said.

The Department of Health and Poison Control have identified a death in North Dakota that may be linked to Diamond Shruumz products, the release said. The two organizations are working with the Food and Drug Administration and state partners to investigate the death.

The recalled products contain muscimol, a chemical found in mushrooms in the Amanita genus that can cause symptoms in people who became ill after eating Diamond Shruumz products, the FDA said.

According to the FDA, as of July 2, there have been 48 illnesses linked to the products in 24 states, 46 people have sought medical attention and 27 have been hospitalized. Symptoms include seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, drowsiness, abnormal heart rate, irregular blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, according to the Department of Health.

If you become ill and suspect poisoning, you can call the Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222.
