Gasoline costs in Atlantic City and New Jersey: Thanks to Chris Christie

Before Chris Christie became governor, New Jersey had the second-lowest gasoline sales tax in America.

As of June 30, 2024, the day before the most recent gasoline sales tax increase takes effect, … New Jersey will have the seventh-highest gasoline tax in America.

An increase of 10 cents per gallon would take effect on July 1, 2024. For the next 5 years, the tax will increase by 2 cents per gallon each year.

All this regressive tax madness could only happen because former Governor Chris Christie made an agreement with the Democrats to raise the gasoline sales tax in 2016.

Christie’s first tax increase in 2016 was 23 cents per gallon of gasoline.

New Jersey voters narrowly approved this measure in 2016. But the “trick” was that many voters thought they were voting for a one-time tax increase to cover an urgent budget deficit.

In reality, the ballot question gave the governor and state legislature the right to raise the gasoline sales tax forever.

The gasoline tax increase is reportedly intended to benefit the state’s Transportation Trust Fund, which covers the maintenance and repair of roads, highways, bridges, tunnels, railroads and potholes.

Thanks to Chris Christie, New Jersey is well on its way to becoming more like the state of California.

We have a permanent program in place that will raise the gasoline sales tax forever.

This is exactly the wrong philosophy of government. Tax policies like this are the reason so many New Jerseyans are leaving the state.

They move to states like Florida, South Carolina, Texas and other states with lower taxes.

Residents, small businesses and motorists should not be taxed more on a regular basis just because the state of New Jersey needs one financial bailout after another.

Chris Christie sparked this chaos on October 14, 2016, when he signed a massive sales tax of 23 cents per gallon of gasoline.

Thanks, Chris Christie…this comment drips with sarcasm…There’s a reason Chris Christie currently has a 7 percent approval rating in New Jersey.

Christie also went back on his word and took cost-of-living increases (COLAs) from retired public safety employees…after promising (three days before his election) not to do so.

Christie made this promise in writing to public safety officials across New Jersey.

Many retired workers have not received a pay raise in 13 years.
