The Russian military destroyed a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet stationed at Dovhyntseve airfield in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the Russian Defense Ministry said on July 4.

The news came after Russian forces attacked another Ukrainian military airport in the town of Myrhorod in Poltava Oblast on July 1. The attack caused “some casualties,” according to former Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat.

“There was an attack. There are some casualties, but not as many as the enemy claims,” he said.

Russia had previously claimed that it had allegedly destroyed five Su-27 fighter jets stationed at the Myrhorod military airport.

The Kyiv Independent could not confirm the allegations.

Air Force spokesman Illia Yevlash declined to comment to the Kyiv Independent on reports of Russian attacks on Ukrainian airfields.

The attack on the Dovhyntseve air base was carried out with an Iskander ballistic missile, the Russian Defense Ministry said and published video footage of the alleged attack on its Telegram channel.

Reports of previous attacks sparked outrage on social media, with some criticising the Air Force for failing to adequately protect the airfields despite advance warnings and the expected arrival of F-16 fighter jets.

The first Danish F-16 fighter jets are expected to arrive in Ukraine this summer. Kyiv is also expecting aircraft from the Netherlands, Belgium and Norway.
