The 6 best video game adaptations in movies, TV shows and comics

The 6 best video game adaptations in movies, TV shows and comics

The relationship between movies and video games can be complicated at times, and some adaptations fall by the wayside. However, there are also diamonds in the rough, including some standout works among the many other media adaptations of video game franchises. This is our top 6 list of the best movies/TV shows/comics based on existing video games.

#6 Warcraft

Warcraft is best known for its Warcraft RTS games and the World of Warcraft MMORPG. Directed by Duncan Jones, the film goes beyond the franchise’s main attraction of attacking bases, looting dungeons, and collecting WoW gold. The film is told from the perspective of Durotan, chieftain of the Frostwolf clan, and Anduin Lothar, the Lion of Stormwind. Much of the film’s plot is based on the first Warcraft game, which features orcs and humans, although the narrative makes many references to some of the other games in terms of characters and settings.

Avid WoW fans will see the attention to detail in places like Elwynn Forest, Stormwind, Dalaran, Karazhan, and even the Dark Portal in all its glory. The film does a good job of staying true to the lore, history, and spirit of the Warcraft games, and many fans of the franchise appreciate its respect for the games.

#5 Path of Exile: Origins

Path of Exile doesn’t have much in the way of external media work – there’s only a short comic series that tells the story of Wraeclast and its people. Still, the comic series has a strong narrative, featuring characters from the Purity Rebellion era such as King Kaom, the High Templar Voll, and Chitus Perandus. Fans of the game will appreciate the comics, as they include some references to certain PoE currencies and items. Amidst the ruins and deserts found on Wraeclast and even Oriath, it’s nice to see what life was like in the more civilized times in Path of Exile.

#4 The Super Mario Brothers Movie

The Mario games are light-hearted fun with cute and touching stories. This also applies to the Super Mario Brothers movie, which tells its own version of the titular siblings.

#3 Fallout

The Fallout games have always been known for their unique 50s retro-futuristic atmosphere and many post-apocalyptic stories that make each installment unforgettable. Originally a CRPG series, now a first-person shooter with some RPG elements, the games let you play as a main character in the wasteland and make decisions that greatly affect the future of the wasteland. When Amazon announced the production of a TV show based on the Fallout series, fans were initially skeptical about whether it would turn out well.

Today, people are praising Amazon’s Fallout series. The show’s producers, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, have already worked on another solid TV series with Westworld, and Fallout continues to be so successful. Fallout fans love this series because it has many nods to the games in terms of storytelling and gameplay. The series presents three protagonists: Vault dweller Lucy MacLean, pre-war ghoul Cooper Howard, and Maximus, a squire of the Brotherhood of Steel.

The show’s plot is a fun outing with some well-earned dramatic elements that elevate the story. We see Lucy’s struggle to adjust to the brutal wasteland after years of being coddled in the Vaults, and Maximus’s show of faith with the Brotherhood. While these two represent the modern wasteland, Cooper Howard/The Ghoul gives us a glimpse of America before the bombs dropped, showing us how he evolved from a noble actor to the cold-blooded gunslinger he is today.

#2 Arcane: A League of Legends Story

League of Legends is primarily a competitive MOBA esport, with a focus on the professional leagues and tournaments that make the game a staple for many players around the world. The game itself offers some brief background information, but it doesn’t have much in the way of actual story. That changed with the release of the hit TV series Arcane: A League of Legends Story.

This show follows some of the game’s champions, including Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, Ekko, Jayce, and Viktor. The show’s plot is very character-driven and features many heart-wrenching moments, especially between Jinx and Vi. The animation is also pretty stellar, with a bombastic art style and a color palette that sometimes looks like the game’s splash art. Arcane is a complete TV show package where even people who have never played LoL can fully enjoy the show for what it is.

Arcane shows us the world of Runeterra in a way that even League of Legends hasn’t done before. We get a glimpse into the lives of the people of Zaun and Piltover, and learn more about the larger-than-life champions that some players have as main characters in the game.

#1 The Last of Us

The Last of Us is one of the many games that Sony is pushing as a cinematic gameplay experience, making the game ideal material for adaptation as a film or television series. Directed by Craig Mazin, the creator of the Chernobyl television series, The Last of Us is every bit as true to the series’ post-apocalyptic feel. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are strong on-screen presences as Joel and Ellie, and the series really tugs at your heartstrings as their relationship grows.

The show takes a few liberties with the game, but it’s all to add weight to the show and to its advantage. It’s still the same story, with Joel taking Ellie across the country to hand her over to the Fireflies, a faction dedicated to curing the Cordyceps infection. Diehard fans still appreciate that the show stays true to the games and puts a few Easter eggs into the show for them to watch and enjoy.

The game has won a number of Emmy and Golden Globe awards for its high quality production and story. Viewers who have never played the game will enjoy the show just as much as those who beat the game on their first playthrough.
