War maps show Ukraine’s progress after recapturing territories

According to the Institute for War Research (ISW), Kyiv’s armed forces have gradually advanced in northeastern Ukraine; current ISW maps show the current state of the front line.

The Washington-based think tank said Ukrainian troops had made progress in Vovchansk, a city near the Russian border where Moscow’s forces launched an offensive in May. The region remains fiercely contested.

ISW’s Wednesday update noted that amid ongoing fighting in the north of Kharkiv region, Ukrainian forces made minor progress in central Vovchansk, while fighting continued nearby.

According to an ISW map, geolocated images from Tuesday show Ukrainian advances north of Vovchansk, where the Russian 79th Motorized Rifle Regiment and Chechen units of the Akhmat Spetsnaz militia are reportedly operating.

The ISV also stated that Ukrainian forces had advanced northwest of Kreminna along the Kupiansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, but also noted Russian reports of advances and attacks by Moscow.

Another map from the think tank showed Ukrainian advances near Kreminina and east of Terny in the area between Kharkiv and Luhansk on July 1. But the map also showed Russian advances further north on June 30 and noted Moscow’s claims that it had captured the town of Stepova Novoselivka.

Meanwhile, a third ISW map showed geolocated footage indicating Russian advances east of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk Oblast, a district the Russian Defense Ministry said it had captured on Wednesday.

According to Moscow’s statements, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Khortytsia group fighting in the region, Nazar Voloshin, said on national television on Thursday that his troops had withdrawn from the canal district of Chasiv Yar.

This was because defensive positions in the area had been destroyed and commanders wanted to move troops to better protected positions. Kyiv Independent reported.

The city has been in Moscow’s focus since the capture of Avdiivka in February and could pave the way for further Russian advances into the Donetsk region.

The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on Tuesday that there had been heavy fighting recently around the town of Toretsk, about 24 kilometers south of Chasiv Yar.

At least six people were killed and 53 injured in a Russian drone and missile attack on the city of Dnipro on Wednesday, said the region’s governor, Serhii Lysak.

According to the chairman of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, Mykola Lukashuk, a shopping center, cars and a gas station were also hit by the strike. Newsweek has asked the Russian Defense Ministry for comment.
