This year’s Summer Pop concert will focus on the musical melting pot of the 1980s with a pumped up and energetic atmosphere.

The theme of this year’s Summer Pops concert is “Totally Awesome 80s.” This multigenerational concert on Saturday, July 13 at 7 p.m. will be fun for all families in southwest Louisiana, said Beth Dawdy, executive director of the Lake Charles Symphony.

“Who doesn’t love ’80s music?” she asked. “Our goal is to attract multi-generational listeners to the Colosseum at the Lake Charles Event Center to experience the magic of a live symphony orchestra.”

The orchestration will be as diverse as the music created in the 1980s, she said.

“This era saw traditional jazz merging with elements of rock, funk, R&B and electronic music.”

Conductor William Rose said the concert will feature “the best songs of the MTV generation,” from artists ranging from Prince to Cyndi Lauper.

The song selection will inspire the audience to dance, sing and use their cell phones as lighters. For some viewers, the sounds of the orchestra will be sentimental.

“There’s an immediacy and a physical pull to the music that you can’t feel just listening to the recording, whether it’s on vinyl, cassette, CD or Spotify,” Rose said. “The recording is like a memory of something that actually happened before – great for helping us remember our feelings and emotions – but a live performance gets deep into our gut and makes it ‘now.'”

Dawdy said guests are encouraged to bring out their best ’80s clothing and are “encouraged to dance, sing along and act like it’s a real rock ‘n’ roll concert – because honestly, it is.”
