Will Chris Jones get rest days in the Chiefs camp? “I have already spoken to Andy”

Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones just signed a long-term contract extension in March and should be available for the team’s upcoming training camp, which begins next month in St. Joseph.

But will he practice every Day?

Jones indicated on Wednesday that this part with coach Andy Reid had not yet been fully resolved.

“Look, man, I’ve talked to Andy about skipping training camp. I’m a little older, right?” Jones said Wednesday at his youth football camp at Blue Valley Southwest High School in Overland Park. “I can feel it. I can feel it when we have one day at training camp. Then give me two days off and one day off, and maybe we can work something out, you know?”

The fact that she had to sit out the 2023 summer break did not seem to harm Jones.

Jones, who sat out training camp and the first game of the regular season before agreeing to a one-year deal in September of last season, was named to the All-Pro first team and voted to the Pro Bowl while tying for the team lead with 10 1/2 sacks.

So how did Reid respond to Jones’ recent request for time off from training camp?

“He just looked at me,” Jones said, smiling. “So the conversation isn’t over yet.”

Another thing to consider: Jones, entering his ninth season with the Chiefs, turns 30 next week. He was asked Wednesday what a realistic trade-off might be given his unique circumstances.

“If I can work a day and have a day off, or work a day and have half a day off, I can do that,” Jones said. “I think it’s pretty fun.”

Jones said his new contract extension with the Chiefs – worth $95 million guaranteed – hasn’t changed his approach to the offseason. He said the most important part of the deal was knowing where he would be for the foreseeable future.

“The mindset is always the same: be in the best shape possible, find a way to interact with the community, but also better yourself, do one good deed every week,” Jones said. “I don’t think my mindset has ever changed, year after year (through different contract situations). I’m just getting a little wiser. I’m getting a few more gray hairs. And we’re going to keep this thing going.”

Jones jumped right into practice at his first camp on Wednesday, teaching the kids, setting them up and cheering them on during offensive and defensive drills. Another youth camp is also planned for Friday in Springfield, Missouri.

Several times, Jones raised his hand in greeting as the campers began shouting, “CJ! CJ!”

“That’s what it’s about, man: the kids, the youth. I think it’s very important to develop the youth. I think it’s very important to engage with the community,” Jones said. “I hate that we waited so damn long for this (in his career), but a lot of things have happened. And I’m just fortunate that this is my first camp.”

Jones said he has spent most of his time in recent days training and playing with his children. He planned to take a vacation in July, just before training camp begins.

“I’m trying to prepare myself,” Jones said, “to win for the third time in a row.”
