Work at Oakmont Country Club could produce harmless natural gas smell

If residents near Oakmont Country Club smell a whiff of natural gas this summer, there’s probably no need to worry.

The club, which will host the 2025 US Open golf tournament next June, is currently undergoing construction, including some projects related to natural gas work.

The club insists that neither members nor nearby residents have cause for concern.

“Everything we do at Oakmont Country Club is for the safety of all club members and the community. That is our top priority,” said Michael McCormick, the club’s groundskeeper.

The natural gas projects are carried out under the direct supervision of Peoples Gas.

Nick Paradise, a spokesman for Peoples Gas, confirmed the work at the country club and said the smell is not harmful. He recommends that anyone concerned about the smell contact Peoples.

“It is not harmful to breathe in natural gas or methane if you smell it. It is not a risk. It is definitely flammable. If you think you smell gas, leave the immediate area and call us.”

For Oakmont Country Club, there is no specific timeline for when work on the property will be completed.

If you smell gas in your neighborhood, contact Peoples Gas at 1-800-400-4271.
