When every song from the A Family Affair soundtrack is played in the movie

The film contains more than a dozen songs

“I’m Your Man” by Wham! – This song is played during the production logos before the film even begins. The upbeat, lively tune underlines the sequence in which Zac Efron’s superstar Chris Cole, one of the leading actors in the A family affair Cast. The lyrics of the song highlight that the character is both an incredibly popular star and that he will play the romantic lead in the film, while the fact that the film was released in 1988 suggests that his tastes may differ from those of women of his own generation.

“Feather” by Sabrina Carpenter – After the introduction of Chris, the film dramatically changes theme with this contemporary track by “Espresso” artist Sabrina Carpenter. It plays during the introduction of Joey King’s character Zara Ford, whose lifestyle is almost diametrically opposed to Chris’s. The change in musical tone underscores this contrast, as well as the fact that Zara is considerably younger than Chris’s future lover, her mother.

“It’s Been a Little Heavy Lately” by Joesef – This song plays quietly in the restaurant where Chris is trying to slow down his relationship with Ashley (Olivia Macklin). The fact that the uptempo song has such dark lyrics highlights the two characters’ differing views in the scene where Ashley is expecting a marriage proposal.

‘Believe’ by Cher – This 1998 hit occupies an important place in the film. Chris sings the song in the car while Zara sits annoyed at the wheel. The song not only underlines their dynamic, but also shows how low Chris’ love life has sunk at the beginning of the film.

“f**k, i’m lonely” by Lauv feat. Annemarie – This song plays during a montage of Chris and his dogs home alone after Zara quits her job as his assistant. It shows not only how empty his life is without Zara’s professional help, but also how lonely he feels in his relationship.

“Dreaming” by Blondie – This iconic song from 1979 plays while Zara’s mother Brooke (Nicole Kidman) is cleaning the house before she meets Chris. Not only does it provide a reason why Brooke doesn’t hear him enter the house, but it also highlights the generational difference between her and her daughter, and connects her more closely musically to the Wham! song that introduced Chris in the first place.

A Blondie T-shirt is an important costume element of

since both Brooke and Chris wear it throughout the film.

“Rose Colored Lenses” by Miley Cyrus – This song plays softly during the scene where Chris and Brooke grow closer while Zara is out. The contemporary nature of the song can remind the audience that Zara is influenced by the potential relationship they are building.

“Stop This Flame” by Celeste – Played during Chris and Brooke’s first kiss and subsequent lovemaking, this funky song combines sensual overtones with a livelier and funnier vibe that highlights the comical moment when Zara bursts in on the two.

“Song for You” by Rhye – This song plays quietly in the background while Zara and her friend Stella discuss a script they are working on.

“Dive” by Olivia Dean – This song plays while Brooke and Chris are exploring the city on their date. Its musicality and lyrics emphasize the fact that the couple is taking the plunge and exploring their relationship despite the risks involved.

“A Woman’s World (Remix)” by Estelle – This song plays while Zara and her friend Eugenie (Liza Koshy) dress up and try to infiltrate a gala that Chris is attending. Its themes of female empowerment serve the scene where the characters take over the narrative and try to make a big power move.

“Deck the Halls” by Devin S. Norris – This is an instrumental version of an oft-covered Christmas classic. This song introduces the scene where Brooke and her mother-in-law Leila (Kathy Bates) are talking while decorating the tree.

“The Christmas Carol (Chestnuts Roasted on an Open Fire)” by Angelina Jordan – This iconic Christmas song plays as Zara watches her mother and Chris get along in what appears to be a private romantic moment. The slightly melancholy tone underscores her feelings, but the iconic Christmas imagery helps to emphasize how her heart is opening to the possibility of connection.

“Present Without a Bow” by Kacey Musgraves (feat. Leon Bridges) – This song takes place just before the A family affair End, during the New Year montage, where all three main characters are shown reeling after the big fight that took place a few scenes earlier. Despite the jingles in the song, its lyrics emphasize the loneliness the trio feels when separated from each other.

“Love On” by Selena Gomez – This is the first song played during the film’s end credits. Its triumphant nature celebrates the fact that the main couple has gotten back together with the help of Zara, who has finally accepted their relationship. It is also the last song on the soundtrack, as the rest of the end credits feature excerpts from the film’s original instrumental music.
