Louisville creator introduces horror comedy audio series “Meat Team”

Louisville-based creator Ryan Pierson just wrapped the first season of Meat Team, an atmospheric and experimental combination of literature, music and sound collage. At its existential core, Meat Team is a horror-comedy program that puts storytelling at its core.

Pierson said in a Facebook post that “each episode is chock full of quirky characters, confusing scenarios, vivid music and satisfying storylines,” all of which are evident in the first episode. The light-heartedly themed episodes range from a tale of a circle of hell reserved for drunken text messages to exes to an exploration of severe social anxiety to the speculative experience of losing one’s mind through ongoing medical intervention.

He says his concept for the series was an extension of his music philosophy, which he describes as “creating interesting spaces.” He thought, “Instead of just creating spaces, why not put idiosyncratic people in those spaces and let them do things?”

The first season will be hosted on Acast and streamed on Spotify and will consist of five episodes. Pierson’s plans for the series are to develop an overarching plot across multiple episodes that will provide listeners with a sense of suspense. Inspired by his experience of completing an episode of a media piece and being left with the question, “But what happens next?”, he wants to explore ways to recreate that experience for his audience. It’s something he’s thought about and studied, so listeners can expect this type of storytelling technique in future seasons of “Meat Team.”
