With great power comes great responsibility for Spider-Man Star Garfield and he certainly has the power in Hacksaw comb. For his role as pacifist hero Desmond Doss, Garfield received numerous awards and nominations, including his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
His acting skills were well received by critics. Empire wrote: “With its occasionally cheesy scenes on the home front, the catastrophic fighting, this film is a worthy addition to the World War II canon. Garfield underpins it all with skill, showing that war can sometimes be human.”
The Guardian wrote in its review: “It is a story of courage, powerfully told by director Mel Gibson and screenwriters Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight, who create a brutal, even unbearably violent picture of war.
