Lupita Nyong’o reveals she attended Beyoncé and Taylor Swift concerts while taking a vocal break after she contracted a polyp from her voice role in ‘The Wild Robot’

  • Seth, 50, said she injured her vocal cords while working on the upcoming animated film The Wild Robot
  • Lupita said she was determined to avoid surgery and her doctor said 35 percent of people recover naturally

Lupita Nyong’o revealed during an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” on Wednesday that she attended concerts by Taylor Swift and Beyoncé while on a vocal break.

The Oscar winner, 41, was on the NBC talk show to promote the horror prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One,” and Seth, 50, mentioned that she injured her vocal cords while working on the upcoming animated film “The Wild Robot.”

Seth asked if the injury was due to difficulty in producing sound in the voice or simply too much voice.

“All right, she’s a robot. And she goes on this journey to find, I guess, what we would call humanity, like empathy. And that’s why I chose this very positive voice at the beginning of the film,” Lupita said animatedly in a higher pitch.

“And it just wasn’t in my local vocal register, which is much lower. So I did it way too long for several days and I got a vocal polyp. That left me unable to speak. And my doctor put me on vocal rest. I had to do vocal rest for three months,” Lupita said.

Lupita said she was determined to avoid surgery and her doctor said 35 percent of patients recover naturally.

“And I was so determined to be part of that 35 percent. And that’s what I did. I healed myself,” Lupita said.

Seth congratulated Lupita and shared photos of her at concerts during her vocal break.

“You went to Beyoncé, you went to Taylor Swift,” Seth said.

“I did,” Lupita confirmed.

“You had to carry a piece of paper that said, ‘I’m taking a vocal break,'” Seth said.

“Yes, I made that at home,” Lupita said of her note at Taylor’s concert.

Seth pointed to an “On Vocal Pause” button for her Beyoncé outfit.

The 41-year-old Oscar winner said she started wearing the note on her vocal pause so people wouldn’t think she was rude if she didn’t talk to them.

“I upgraded after a few months. I figured I could have someone else make me a button,” Lupita said.

Seth asked if she would just make a gesture when people passed by.

“Yeah, exactly. Because sometimes people, the fans, thought I was rude because I didn’t say anything. I just said something like that,” Lupita said, striking a pose.

“So I just thought, okay, I’ll just tell people what’s going on and they’ll have sympathy for me and not hate,” she added.

A Quiet Place: Day One is scheduled to be released in the US on June 28 by Paramount Pictures.

The premiere of “The Wild Robot” is scheduled for September at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, with the US theatrical premiere scheduled for September 27.

DreamWorks Animation’s animated sci-fi survival drama adventure film follows the title character Roz, a robot who is shipwrecked on a deserted island and is voiced by Lupita.

The Wild Robot’s voice cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Catherine O’Hara and Star Wars legend Mark Hamill.
